No Secrets - Just Scraps of Honesty

Yvonne Perry of Writers in the Sky has honored me with an Honest Scrap Award. The award is for bloggers who blog honestly and from the heart, and I'm really flattered. There are no medals, no trophies, no big checks to cash...just the opportunity to share ten of my deepest secrets with you. I also get to nominate seven additional bloggers for an Honest Scrap Award, which I will do at the bottom of this post.

So here goes...more than you ever wanted to know about me:
  1. I love to cook and hate to clean. Since I'm a very messy cook, this can be a problem.

  2. I rarely use recipes. They're like coloring books - someone else has already had all the fun creating the pictures. I like a blank canvas!

  3. When I was in my early 20's, I was a singing waitress and I loved it!

  4. I have firewalked (walking on a bed of hot coals). It was a turning point in my life and an incredible experience.

  5. I believe panang curry is quite possibly the most wonderful taste in all the world.

  6. I recently lost over 75 pounds following Weight Watchers and have gained 22 of those pounds back. Food and I have an interesting and challenging relationship.

  7. Until I was an adult, I never ate pecan pie. We used hickory nuts instead.

  8. My father could not read or write, but he ran his own business successfully for years. He was one of the smartest and hardest working men I've ever known. He worked full time, raised a BIG garden, always had some type of livestock (pigs, cattle, chickens) that he raised for both food and sale. He worked all the time.

  9. I was raised Baptist until I was about four, then as a Jehovah's Witness. I later joined a Presbyterian church so I could sing in the choir. I left when I could no longer pretend to share the same beliefs and explored some more, finally finding my way home to an eclectic neo-Pagan spiritual path. I believe that all the "truth" in the world, should we ever find it, will amount to no more than two or three grains of pure thought; the rest is just fluff and bother. If we look for what we have in common instead of focusing on our differences, we could eliminate the hatred and misery associated with religious intolerance.

  10. I believe that people act on what they believe, even when they don't know or understand their own beliefs. I don't get mad too often because 99.9% of the stuff that might make me angry really isn't about me at all. It's just people doing what they do.

Ok...that's my ten things...not exactly secrets, but chances are you didn't know them all. Now it's time to pass the torch. I'm nominating the following honest, gutsy bloggers for the Honest Scrap Award:

Alex (Deaconblues1982)

Julie Ann Dunn

Sitara Haye

Mark David Gerson

Robert Girandola

Josie Thane

2da1

Katherine Turner

Ok, folks...show us your honest, scrappy selves. You're on!

  5. I came in at the right moment, didn't I? Just as I was speaking of religion. I'll stick you in my google reader and be by every day. I may learn something.

Thank you for sharing .. your words (even those you think are simple) are quite profound for many of us. You help me look at life from a different angle. You have helped me embrace what is 'now' in my life, not what 'has been' or 'should be'. Congratulations on the Honest Scrap Award !

    What a beautifully honest post!

I, myself, was raised as a Jehovah's Witness also. I later turned to the pagan path as well..

I never ate pecan pie as a child either...

Funny how honesty pulls people together.

  8. I'm way behind with this ... sorry! THANK YOU for the great comments, everyone. Some of you are dear and beloved
friends; some are (I hope) new friends.

Laura, how many "coincidences" could we have? Nice to meet you! And yes, it is strange how honesty pulls people together.

Hope you'll all make this a regular stop; I love it when you sing with me!

i'm a little sad that you left me out...however, i don't think i've ever, in my life, waited for a freakin' invitation to say what's on my mind, so like it or not here's ten things from the most "honest blogger" you'll every meet!
    1. unlike my dear mother, i belive Pissed Off is a perfectly valid state of being. other people's actions may not have anything to do with us, but (as anyone who reads this blog should know) we are all connected, and yeah, the stupidity of other people does affect us-- even if it wasn't meant to.
    2. i HATE it when people don't clean up after they cook. this is not so much of a secret, but it bears repeating.
    3. i try really, REALLY hard to make you proud of me. i try so hard that it drives me crazy, and then, when you say, "i'm already proud of you," it just leads me right back to Pissed Off.
    4. i always knew we only went to that Presbytarian church so you could sing in the choir!
    5. i'm beginning to wonder if ten wasn't just a bit too ambitious...
    6. i believe that action is better than inaction. even if it's a teeny tiny petty action, just to get the ball rolling. thinking on your feet is better than thinking on your butt.
    7. i secretly think that i am the smartest person in the room. any room. it's not that other people are dumb, it's just that i'm the total package... intelligent and practical!
    8. i have a mean streak a mile wide. it's burried deep inside and most of the time it stays there, but every once in a while i'm tempted by forces greater than you'll ever know to do something truly nasty... most of the time i don't act on it.
    9. i can't keep a secret. never have been able to, and i have no poker face when it comes to my emotions... told you i was honest!
    10. i think you blog sounds pretentious, but then again, the nature of blogging is completely narcissitic anyway, so what difference does it make? ha! nobody even asked me for my ten honest scraps, and i had no problem whatsoever unloading my personal brand of crap on your unsuspecting audience. so rock on little blogger and know that i love you like mad!
i'll be here when you get back.

  14. The best (maybe) part of this is that there will be people who read your comment and will know that they'd rather read your stuff than mine. They'll like your wit and honesty and slightly edgy tone and ask, "Where does she blog?" and I won't have an answer for them. That's too bad. You're good at it, you little closet narcissist, you.

I am proud of you. And I love you. And you keep me humble and remind me that while I don't get angry often, it can still happen. And it's ok.
